What to do, what to do
Parties are playing politics
While the planet's in a stew!

Here's a simple way to stay informed when Canada's political leaders make headlines and blog entries on the environment:

Google Alerts

I created four news alerts, one for each party leader, and now my inbox is keeping me notified whenever one of these dedicated people says or does something news worthy. This is how my Inbox looks:

How to set it up

Note: It's not a requirement to have a Google account, but it helps if you want to use all the alert features. We're going to do without, but look below for a idea of what the alert interface looks like.
  1. Open the Google News Alert page
  2. Create one alert for each candidate using the word environment and their last name.

The search terms are simple for the three mainstream parties, since their last names are distinctive. So for my example, I'll use Green Party Candidate Elizabeth May. This alert needs a little more info.

  3. Search terms: environment elizabeth may green party
  4. Type: Comprehensive (this will return results from news, blogs, and web)
  5. How often: as-it-happens (you also have a choice of one a day, or once a week.
  6. Your email: dfdumaresq at gmail dot com
  7. Which looks like this: create alert
  8. Submit by clicking 'Create the Alert', and confirm on the email that Google sends you, and you're done.
